Bountiful Sprout brings natural, organic and pesticide free beef, pork, chicken and more to Wimberly area


For folks in the Hill Country there's a viable alternative to grocery stores, Whole Foods and farmer's markets. The Bountiful Sprout LLC allows members to place a once a month order for natural, organic and pesticide free beef, chicken, pork, dairy and processed foods from a long list of Hill Country producers.

The community organized food buying co-op had its beginnings late in 2007. Members receive a list of available products every month. They place their order during a brief ordering window and pick up their purchases a few days later.

The December 2009 list of available products runs 44 pages and includes organic and natural beef, free range chicken lamb meat and pastured pork.

Prepard foods including pralines, sweet potato pies, bread pudding, banana nut bread, baked vegetable empanadas, meat loafs, cookies, pestos, brownies, yeast breads, bars, cakes and artisan bread are on the list. Kimchi and organic spelt and gmo free tortillas are sold too.  Locally grown vegetables and locally produced soaps, body care products, herbal remedies round out the list.

Membership in the co-op is $42.90 per year and 10% is added to each order to cover co-op expenses. There is no volunteer hour requirement and you can take a look at the ordering list before joining.

Green Living for the Hill Country presents an Eco-Mixer, Monday November 9 in Fredericksburg


John Watson, founder of "Green Living for the Hill Country" is putting together a Green Drinks like event in Fredericksburg, Monday November 9 from 6:00 to 7: 30 pm at Kelly's CafĂ©,  505 W. Main, Fredericksburg 78624.

John describes the Eco-Mixer as an opportunity to discuss ecological concerns with friends and environmental leaders over appetizers and drinks.  Each Eco-Mixer will focus on a specific issue of interest to the Hill Country and will showcase local organizations, businesses, and innovators seeking to bring positive solutions.  Time will be allowed for mixing and brief presentations.  November's topic will be greener products and services.

San Antonio Clean Tech Nuclear Forum , September 16, 2009 presented leading advocates for and against the South Texas Nuclear Project expansion

San Antonio's Clean Tech Forum presented leading advocates for and against the expansion of the South Texas Nuclear Project on September 16, 2009.  The decision as to whether City Public Service will continue with their investment in the project has yet to be made and the debate is evolving.  SASL does not take a position as a group on the merits of nuclear power or any other issue.

Speakers at the forum included San Antonio mayor, Julian Castro, Steve Bartley Interim General Manager of CPS Energy, Craig Severance, CPA, author of Business Risks and Costs of New Nuclear Power, Patrick Moore Co-Chair of a pro-nuclear group founded by a public relations firm: Clean and Safe Energy Coalition (CASEnergy) and Dr. Arjun Makhijani President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research and author of Carbon Free and Nuclear Free a roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy

A Rocha (uh-RAW-sha) in Fredericksburg and elsewhere mobilizing Christians to care for creation through action and education


Pronounced (uh-Raw-sha meaning the Rock in Portuguese) and based in Fredericksburg, Texas, A Rocha USA is part of an international family of conservation organizations. They work to present to Christians the biblical basis for environmental stewardship and the scientific understanding of the causes and effects of environmental degradation and the best methods for correcting it.

Local communities in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obisbo, California, Boise, Idaho, Seattle and Lynden, Washington, Wilmore, Kentucky along with Fredericksburg, Texas take actions ranging from bird banding and trail repair to establishing community gardens as do A Rocha college chapters at Wheaton College, Asbury College, Grove City College, Westmont College, Grace College and Ohio State University.

Their education program has numerous downloadable fun and educational activities for kids including building a caterpillar habitat and a making a window ledge grow bag.

Search underway for new Headwaters Coalition director

The Headwaters Coalition, the group established by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word to protect the remaining parts of the headwaters of the San Antonio River on the grounds of theUniversity of the Incarnate Word, is in the process of finding a new director due to the departure of Lacey E. Halstead for a new position in Virginia.

Her departure comes soon after the completion of a Sanctuary Master Plan for the property.

Headwaters Coalition plans September 17 th Third Thursday "Invasive Plant Attack" and October 15th "Trail Day"

On the third Thursday of each month, the Headwaters Coalition takes on a work project in the headwaters area of the San Antonio River on the grounds of Incarnate Word University. The work takes place from 12:30 to 4:30 pm.

September 17th will be an "Invasive Plant Attack". Volunteers will remove Ligustrum along the central trail loop. Ligustrum is native to Japan but considered invasive in south Texas. Snacks and water water and tools will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring refillable water bottles and to advised to wear sturdy boots and long pants. Meet at the sanctuary entrance by the double soccer fields.

October 15th will be "Trail Day". Volunteers will help build and repair trails. Snacks, tools and water are provided, but again boots and long pants are advised.

Headwater's Coalition creates master plan to protect remaining undeveloped headwaters of San Antonio River

The Headwaters Coalition has completed a master plan to guide further development of the headwaters of the San Antonio River which was put into the protection of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word by San Antonio philanthropist George W. Brackenridge .

From the executive summary of the plan:
This master plan focuses on physical aspects of sanctuary stewardship (ecological restoration and visitor infrastructure). As such, it represents the beginning of strategic planning for the Headwaters project and will be followed with collaborations that target the equally important areas of education and scholarship, spiritual exploration, and cultural heritage (see Goals, below).

While thetHeadwaters Coalition views its mission holistically, we recognize the need to divide a large planning project into stages; this sanctuary master plan is the first piece of a larger whole. Within this document we attempt to outline the process by which we will restore and maintain the ecological integrity of the sanctuary land and facilitate public access.
Goals for the plan include (from the master plan):
1. Ecological Restoration: Restore and maintain the ecological integrity of the sanctuary to the degree possible, and allow for natural variation over time.

2. Cultural Heritage Preservation and Spiritual Exploration: Protect and celebrate the cultural heritage associated with the Headwaters, through education and through the continuance of cultural uses. Support spiritual exploration through understanding historical spiritual use, engaging in spiritual experiences, and bringing forth the sacred nature of the land.

3. Education and Scholarship: Use the sanctuary as a platform for educational programs covering such topics as ecology, environmental sustainability, human history with the land, nature and spirituality.

4. Sanctuary Visitation. Provide a restorative, broadening and safe environment for humans, while always respecting and protecting the natural community.

The Central Texas Zero Waste Alliance, part of the zero waste movement (far beyond ordinary recycling) will stop at nothing!


The Central Texas Zero Waste Alliance (CTZWA) chapter in Austin is part of a national movement to eliminate the concept of waste entirely by treating "waste" as a resource in disguise. Related organizations include the Zero Waste Alliance, the Southwest Network for Zero Waste and Zero Waste International Alliance.

The case for zero waste is made in a 2001 power point "Zero Waste the Key to our Future" produced by the Zero Waste Alliance from which the two slides to the left were taken.

The concept of zero waste was also promoted in the book Cradle to Cradle by William McDonough and Michael Braungart. The idea is to move beyond recycling. To them recycling merely turns higher quality products into lower quality ones that are discarded. "It is not recycling, it is just slow motion waste" in the words of Amazon reviewer David C N Swanson.

The CTZWA is committed to "the realization of a sustainable zero waste (or darn close) economy in Central Texas before 2040." They are working to educate about, advocate for, and promote Zero Waste in Central Texas, by working with the general public, elected officials, governmental staff, businesses, schools, Councils of Government, institutions, state agencies, religious organizations, non-profits, the media, citizen and environmental groups, and any other relevant entities.

The CTZWA meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7 pm at 611 South Congress Ave Ste 200, Austin Tx 78704 (south of the river near Congress and Riverside).

Next meeting of Energia-Mia announced for Sunday August 16, 2009


Sunday, August 16, Energia-Mia, the San Antonio anti nuclear expansion coalition, will meet at the San Antonio Area Progressive Action Coalition offices (7122 San Pedro Ste #114, San Antonio 78216) at 6 pm.

Topics will include a debriefing concerning recent Town Hall meetings, planning for a press conference on water issues related to the expansion of the South Texas Nuclear Project, plans for speaking engagements for Dr. Arjun Makhijani, author of Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free: A Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy among other works and Craig Severance, author of Business Risks and Costs of New Nuclear Power who will be in town to participate in the San Antonio Clean Tech Forum September 16, 2009 and planning for a community education event.

San Antonio Clean Tech Forum launches group website, blog and forum


The San Antonio Clean Tech Forum, begun in 2008 by former Tesoro Petroleum CEO Michael Burke, has launched a group website: www.sacleantech.org .

The group which mainly focuses on big picture issues of sustainability related to government actions and industrial developments has already influenced public debate through their Mayoral Candidate Forum and other events. Their membership includes many people well connected to San Antonio's behind the scenes power structure, although it is also open to students and interested citizens.

According to the group's statement of priorities:
Participants in SA Clean Tech are committed to help facilitate a broad range of governmental, business and educational related community initiatives to advance “Critical Priorities for San Antonio.”
1. Learn what technologies, programs, & practices are most appropriate for our region.
2. Communicate via major media the best ideas for saving money, energy, water and clean air.
3. Educate, train and develop our workforce for good paying new jobs in clean tech in the future.
4. Propose guidelines, programs and initiatives to direct investment & assure appropriate behavior.
5. Incentivize action - identify, encourage and communicate rebates, grants, & subsidies.
6. Finance entrepreneurial initiatives in resource efficiency and Alternative Energy.
7. Attract talent and businesses to accelerate the growth of the clean tech revolution.
Their September 16, 2009 Nuclear Forum will include speakers who support and those who oppose the expansion of the South Texas Nuclear Project and San Antonio's funding of it. Tickets are $50 ($20 for students).

The site includes a blog based on the frequent emails members of SACTF have received with links to news items of interest, descriptions of past events and (it is hoped) some past presentations. To pay for the site it will have paid members-only section with forums, exclusive content and discounts on SACTF forum tickets.

San Antonio's Consumer Energy Coalition makes a case against CPS nuclear power expansion.

San Antonio's Consumer Energy Coalition is a genuine grassroots organization. They describe themselves as "A citizens’ lobbying group looking for better ways to produce energy" and as "a volunteer group of citizens including pharmacists, lawyers, teachers, computer analysts, small business owners, doctors, environmental planners,and more who believe: To supply our future energy needs we can either generate much more, or use what we have more productively."

They believe that "San Antonio should spend rate-payer money on energy efficiency, renewable energy and co-generation.These are clean, inexpensive, distributed, fuel-free and available now. San Antonio should not spend tax-payer money on nuclear power plants or coal power plants."

They are an active participant in the anti-nuclear coalition Local Power / Energia Mia www.EnergiaMia.org which is operating in high gear to oppose the expansion of the South Texas Nuclear Project.

At the 2009 Green Camp San Antonio, the Consumer Energy Coalition resented a thoroughly researched and footnoted powerpoint presentation. The presenter / author gave SASL permission to adapt that presentation to the blog format. (The views expressed are strictly theirs. The SASL as a group does not take a position on any issue. The Myths of Nuclear Power

San Antonio should not spend tax-payer money on nuclear power plants or coal power plants.
Nuclear and coal power plants are polluting, expensive, centralized megaprojects and have a long build time.

People have forgotten why nuclear power has languished for thirty years. It is not just an energy technology. "Nuclear power is a unique complex of technical, economical, [environmental, medical,] political, and military interests" Jan Willem Storm van Leeuwen, Ceedata Consultancy, Netherlands

Why We Are Concerned About Nuclear Power (and think you should be)

Corporate and institutional interests have far more access to the politicians who appropriate capital expenditures while taxpayers have no equivalent forum in which to be heard.

This overly restrictive and preferential system allows the industry to reap the profits associated with selling power while taxpayers are forced to back most of the costs and risks associated with mining, building, and storage. This is not free market capitalism. This is risk without benefit for taxpayers. Taxpayers, not ratepayers, are actually assuming the risk.

Taxes will pay for energy that the taxpayer never sees or uses. Ratepayers should pay for the energy they receive; taxpayers should not pay for energy they do not benefit from.

We believe the ratepayers should be included in this decision because we will fund the construction, pay for the extraction of the fuel and pay to secure the resulting waste for millions of years. Ratepayers are on the hook for these risks. Ratepayers should be able to make this decision.

There is a lot of “myth-information” about nuclear power. Here are the most common ones.

Myth: Nuclear power is cheap.
Myth: Nuclear power is clean.
Myth: Nuclear power is safe.
Myth: Nuclear power is secure.
Myth: Nuclear power is sustainable.
Myth: Nuclear power creates local jobs.
Myth: Nuclear power is reliable.
Myth: Nuclear power can be implemented quickly.

These statements are not true, but are put out by the nuclear industry and, incredibly, by our publicly-owned utility, CPS.

We present our findings, with sources, and respectfully ask you to consider them.

If utilities admit that a nuclear plant is more costly than other options they would sound unwise, so they say it’s the “least costly” of the options they have considered. (Source: Craig A. CPS has said repeatedly at recent board meetings that nuclear power is the “least risky” option for providing its ratepayers with new energy.

Nuclear power is very risky in almost every aspect we have considered, making this sound as if CPS is trying to sell us on nuclear power, rather than allowing us to evaluate it objectively. We can start by looking at the reactors already built at the South Texas Nuclear Project.



“Nuclear power, once claimed to be too cheap to meter, is now too costly to matter.” (The Economist Magazine. May 19, 2001, Cover story).

Where does all this money come from? Private investors don’t risk their money on nuclear energy. Venture capitalists vote with their dollars. If an industry is healthy, they bet on it. Federal Subsidies

In the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Congress insures against accidents by extending Price Anderson Act until 2025 which insures utilities against catastrophic accidents with federal money; private insurers won’t take the risk, gives 1.8 cents per kWh production tax credit for first 6,000 MW of new nuclear generation for first 8 years of operation, insures utilities for construction delays due to hearings or litigation, provides $2 billion for uranium enrichment ventures (private sector refused to finance), promises to store nuclear waste, has collected only $20 billion in nuclear waste fund from industry (ratepayers), yet not provided a viable facility. (The National Academy of Sciences says $100 billion will be needed, The nuclear industry is suing the federal government for not providing a facility).

“CBO considers the risk of default on such a loan guarantee to be very high—well above 50 percent. The key factor accounting for this risk is that we expect that the plant would be uneconomic to operate because of its high construction costs, relative to other electricity generation sources.”

How can CPS possibly claim that nuclear is the “least risky option”?

The industry is remarkably forthcoming about its dependence on subsidies. In 2008, Constellation Energy’s Co-CEO Michael Wallace said in the New York Times that "Without loan guarantees we will not build nuclear power plants.” (Andrews, E. This led Jerry Taylor, of the conservative Cato Institute think-tank to write: “Those who favor nuclear power should adopt a policy of tough love. Getting this industry off the government dole would finally force it to innovate or die - at least in the United States. State subsidies
The 2007 Texas Legislature passed property tax breaks and created a state decommissioning program. The Governor’s task force recommended fast-tracking water permits, increased uranium mining and licensed one radioactive waste dump in Texas

From 1984 to 1993, electric utilities in states with nuclear construction projects wrote off in excess of $17 billion for abandoned plants throughout the country.

The Primacy of Prudence

If utilities admit that a nuclear plant is more costly than other options they would sound unwise, so they say it’s the “least costly” of the options considered. Remember, CPS told its board “nuclear is the least risky option” of its choices?

The primary requirement of a utility is to act with prudence. This is a legal term for public utilities. Utility rate-making law is founded on the principle that a utility is allowed to recover from ratepayers all costs which are prudently incurred. Costs judged to be imprudent may not be recovered from ratepayers.

Prudence means avoiding the choice of high-risk options, when a lower-risk option will “get the job done.” Shifting the risks to the ratepayers does not make the risks go away, it only privatizes the profits while socializing the risks. Those who make bad decisions walk away from the effects of their imprudence. After the market meltdown, the public has no more stomach for this. (Severance, C. (2009). State Regulatory Agencies

In the 1980s alone, state commissions disallowed from utility rate bases more than $7 billion of nuclear costs due to construction imprudence.

Another $2 billion in nuclear costs were disallowed due to the imprudence of building new capacity that was in excess of what was needed when completed.

What effect do subsidies used with imprudence have on local economies?

Utilities pass them on to the ratepayer. Nuclear megaprojects may charge customers during construction, who then pay for zero watts of energy. Higher rates risk lower demand; customers do without (efficiency) or make own (renewables) which adds up to imprudence. Credit ratings go down, financing for further projects is unavailable, investors don’t invest, developers are driven to high debt ratios. Growth is stymied and the entire economy of the area is downgraded.

Perhaps the most infamous boondoggle was the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant on the Long Island Sound. The Long Island Lighting Company spent twenty-five years and $6 billion, eighty times the original estimate, trying to get it up and running. But it was never licensed to operate. What does business have to say?

Jerry Tayor writes“I …work at the Cato Institute, and blaming government for economic problems is what keeps me in business. But…government [regulation is not] the reason investors were saying “no” to [nuclear] loan applications.” and “How do France (and India, China and Russia) build cost-effective nuclear power plants? Forbes Business Magazine recognized how profoundly dysfunctional the industry is when it wrote: “This failure of the U.S. nuclear power program ranks as the largest managerial disaster in business history, a disaster of monumental scale.” According to Forbes, “only the blind, or the biased, can now think the money has been well spent.” Nuclear Power's Failed Promise. The truth: Nuclear power pollutes in some of the most dangerous ways known.

Nuclear energy pollutes when it releases radioactive gases and liquids, both routinely and accidentally and when it leaves behind tons of deadly, long-lived waste.

The industry claims it creates no air pollution. It does. During construction of the plant and mining of uranium tons of carbon dioxide are produced. But worse, during operation radioactive gases are released routinely and legally. We don’t know about them because, unlike smog or particulate matter, we can’t see, hear, feel or smell them. We need a short, (painless!) lesson here, to understand how radiation works.

Radioactive substances (radionuclides) are elements that are unstable. Imagine them as a person trying to hold onto twenty billiard balls at once. They will feel one falling, move to catch it, and in the process start to drop another. This is an unstable arrangement. If the person drops a few of the billiard balls, he finds he doesn’t have to exert as much energy to hold on to fewer of them.

Elements are made of atoms that are unstable like this. They have so many particles that it takes too much energy to hang on to all of them. Radioactive elements also release particles and energy to be more stable.

It is these particles and rays of energy, released from atoms of elements, that are radiation. Radioactive elements all produce radiation that is harmfully energetic (meaning it destroys the normal functioning of living cells – which are what keep us alive).

Again, you can think of it like two people playing dodge ball. The harder you throw the ball at the other, the bigger the bruise.

When strong energy hits a living cell it can kill it, damage it, or cause the DNA codes to be disrupted so the cell does not function properly. The more energy, or the more times it hits, the more damage done to the cell.

We need these cells to be healthy; they manage the processes that keep us alive. When they are damaged, that part of the body doesn’t work. Cancer occurs when cells multiply rapidly and needlessly. Cancer in a body disrupts the activity of healthy cells, and causes the death of the whole organism.

This is why radioactive elements need to be isolated from the environment and kept away from us

Nuclear power generates electricity by splitting atoms (helping them drop the particles and energy that make them unstable) and therefore releasing radiation. It is not the only source of radiation. You are exposed to naturally harmful radiation whenever you fly in an airplane at 30,000 feet. This is because earth’s atmosphere protects us from the harmful radiation of the sun and, at 30,000 feet there is less atmosphere so more harmful rays can reach you. The nuclear industry, however, is being purposefully disingenuous when it implies that a little radiation won’t hurt you. Even natural radiation that is energetic enough to disrupt cell function is harmful. We aren’t protected when we fly at 30,000 feet, but most of us are willing to take the risk of a little exposure to have the convenience of fast travel. The government sets the standards, and we live with the risk.

We all choose to take risks, it’s part of life. However, we should know which risks we’re taking and be given the choice as to whether to take them. When we choose to drive a car, we know that many people die in automobile accidents. We try to minimize the risk by wearing seatbelts, taking driving lessons, and not drinking alcohol, but we know it’s there when we make the decision. What is not acceptable is when a small group of people decides for us which risks we’re going to take and isn’t honest about the consequences.

That is what is happening with nuclear energy. A relatively small group of utilities, corporations, and the politicians that they lobby, have decided the amount of radiation we, the public, will be exposed to. They are doing it to make a profit. And we don’t know when we’re exposed, because radiation can’t be felt, smelled, seen, or heard. We don’t know when we’re getting it or how much we’re getting.


Nuclear energy pollutes when it…

Releases radioactive gases and liquids routinely.

Radioactive substances build up in reactors and must be released for the safety of workers. The NRC permits these releases. The pollutants produced are a potpourri of radioactive elements, not just one. Here are some and how they affect the body


Strontium-90 is released in small amounts daily, large amounts during accidents, is treated like calcium by the body which concentrates it in any kind of milk, breasts, and bones, causing cancers years later. Its radioactive dangers last 600 years.


Iodine-131 is quickly absorbed by thyroid, especially in children. Potassium iodide tablets lower risk of thyroid cancer, but are seldom made available.

Cesium-137 acts like potassium in the body, is captured by muscle cells and causes cancer. Dr. John Gofman, discoverer of uranium-233, estimates that 100 reactors operating for 25 years, preventing cesium leaks 99.9% of the time, would still release enough cesium to equal 4 Chernobyl accidents.


Noble Gases damage lung, liver, skeleton, digestive tract; often settle near testes and ovaries, causing birth defects. 2.97 million curies released by U.S. reactors in 1974; some can be filtered, some cannot. They often decay into more deadly radioactive elements like cesium-135, which has a half-life of 3 million years,

Plutonium-239 less than one millionth of a gram will cause lung cancer if inhaled, resembles iron, so body sends it to bone marrow, and causes blood cancers such as lymphoma or leukemia, It is stored in liver and causes liver cancer. Being teratogenic, which means it enters a developing embryo through the placenta it can be stored in testicles causing mutations in offspring and testicular cancer, as a half-life of 24,000 years, making it dangerous for over a half million years.

Tritium as a gas is easily absorbed through skin, Tritiated water (1,360 curies released yearly) is an isotope of water, so it is absorbed like water in the cells, can be ingested in food, water, inhaled, or absorbed through skin, dangerous for 120-248 years,Taken in by plants, and animals in environment; bioconcentrates in food chain, causes tumors in lung and digestive tract, shrinks testicles and ovaries even at low doses, causing birth defects, mental retardation, Down’s Syndrome, smaller brains and deformed fetuses, and reproductive loss in offspring Some of these radionuclides, like plutonium, are extremely long-lived. It’s half-life is 24,000 years.

Radiation is measured in curies. For reference, a large medical center with 1000 laboratories may have a total of 2 curies of radioactive materials. The average operating nuclear power reactor, by contrast, will have around 16 billion curies in its reactor core. This is equivalent to 1000 Hiroshima bombs. The nuclear power industry routinely releases millions of curies yearly.

Accidental vs. planned releases of radioactivity

We’ve been describing planned releases. Accidental releases happen all the time and are called “incidents” by the industry. They occur due to human or mechanical error.

As our fleet of nuclear reactors age we can expect to see more of these “incidents.” Metal fatigue causes structures to become fragile and brittle, and the radioactivity inside a reactor is intense.

Even more concerning is the fact that the Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRC), which monitors the industry is planning to extend the time reactors can be used from 30 to 70 years, and decrease the number of safety redundancy requirements from 5 to 1.

Nuclear energy also pollutes when it leaves behind tons of deadly, long-lived, radioactive waste.

The U.S. has now produced over 77,000 tons of waste from nuclear energy production.


The volumes are staggering:
by 2020 France expects to generate 1.9 million cubic meters annually.
England produced 470,000 cubic meters as of 2005, enough to fill the Albert Hall 5 times over.

Yucca Mountain

The only repository in the world that has been (partially) built to store nuclear waste is Yucca Mountain, a site in Nevada100 miles from Las Vegas.

This site is geologically active, prone to earthquakes, collects moisture inside the mountain causing rust on metal containment vessels. The National Academy of Sciences doubts the accuracy of data collected at the site. It will only be able to hold the waste already generated.

Nevadans have fought for decades to keep the waste out of their state. No one around the world is requesting to host a high-level nuclear waste dump.

Land used to store nuclear waste is land sacrificed; it will never be used by humans safely again.

San Antonio Bicycling Club Links: San Antonio may not be bike friendly but here's a list of groups that help you bike with friends

Here's a list from the Express-News and one more with added descriptions:

San Antonio Bike Rides has maps of routes you can take in and near San Antonio. They also have a blog that allows you to follow the creation and revision of the maps. It isn't a club but can help you decide where to ride.

Green Spaces Alliance in voting contest for $25,000 to fund 3 community gardens in low income neighborhoods.


Green Spaces Alliance needs your help to obtain a $25,000 grant which will fund the establishment of 3 community gardens in low income parts of San Antonio. The alliance is a one of 10 finalists in a contest sponsored by Markham Vineyards of Napa Valley.

From now until August 24, 2009 you can vote once every day for one of the finalists. The top two vote-getters will receive $25,000.

Right now, Green Spaces is in fifth place and in need of a push. Green Spaces has a track record of achievement, this grant would do San Antonio a world of good.

SA Clean Tech Forum to host nuclear power panel discussion September 16, 2009 at Pearl Stables

A Nuclear Power Forum, hosted by San Antonio's Clean Tech Forum (SACTF)on September 16 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Pearl Brewery Stables will feature among others Dr. Patrick Moore who is an avid supporter of nuclear power.

San Antonio Express-News editor, Bob Rivard will moderate the panel and the E-N will publish a series of articles focusing on the issue in the lead up to the conference.

The Clean Tech Forum intends to partner with other organizations to create additional seminars on the 15th and 16th of September to take advantage of the presence of experts on the issues in San Antonio.

UPDATE: August 12, 2009. It appears that speakers will also include Dr. Arjun Makhijani, author of Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free: A Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy among other works and Craig Severance, author of Business Risks and Costs of New Nuclear Power.

"Stephen Colley Greens Your Home!" at Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, Saturday July 18

On Saturday, July 18 Mitchell Lake Audubon Center presents architect Stephen Colley in a wet workshop they call "Stephen Colley Greens Your Home". Stephen will provide inspiring, often simple ways to live “green” right here in San Antonio. The workshop will focus on water and energy issues, such as efficiency and multiple usage, energy conservation, and water quality.

The workshop which runs from 10 to Noon is free but your RSVP is required to mlac@audubon.org

Stephen Colley, AIA is technical coordinator for Build San Antonio Green, a pioneer of green architecture in San Antonio, an architect in private practice and the long time leader of San Antonio Sustainable Living.

Get a free Presto Hoop Compost Bin from Keep San Antonio Beautiful

Keep San Antonio Beautiful is offering four 15 minute composting classes on Friday July 10 at their offices at 1940 Grandstand, San Antonio TX 78238. (It's in the Alamo Downs business park off of the access road inside Loop 410 north of Culebra.

The classes are at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. No registration or RSVP is needed. Each attendee will receive a free Presto Hoop Compost Bin. I've had a similar bin for many years. It isn't heavy duty but it works fine. One website even recommends it be used as a vertical tower garden.

Keep San Antonio Beautiful established in 1980 is an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful. They partner with government, industry and individuals in projects including Adopt-A-Spot Litter Control, Dial-A-Trailer, Basura Bash, Graffiti Wipeout, Green Team Challenge, Project Re-directory School Competition, and the Alamo Forest Partnership.

If you make it out to one of the workshops and if you pay CPS for your garbage collection you might want to work in a visit to the San Antonio Household Hazardous Waste collection site nearby at 7030 Culebra Road. It is open on Fridays from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and paid for through an addition to your CPS bill. Be sure to bring your CPS bill for identification.

You could even drop off an analog television, or do your good deed for the day by helping out an apartment dweller who doesn't have access to the CPS HHW site and drop off their broken or unwanted TV .

To address the severe drought conditions we are experiencing throughout the region, GEAA is mounting a campaign to give bragging rights to all of us who are pitching in to conserve water this summer.

We have three versions of yard signs available for display in your front yard that announce, "I'm not watering - I'm sharing my water with local farmers, our Hill Country springs, or Whooping Cranes."

GEAA members are aware of the need to maintain flows from the Comal and San Marcos springs to provide freshwater that Whooping Cranes (and river outfitters) rely upon for their livelihood. And, doesn't is just make sense that scarce water resources are better used on food crops than on carpet grass?

With your help, we hope to encourage people to make the connection between suburban water usage and the health of our Edwards Aquifer ecosystem.
We want to get these signs out in our neighborhoods as soon as possible - all over the Hill Country! Will you help us spread the message that we all need to share our water resources during the hot summer months?

Yard signs sell for $15 each from GEAA's office at 1809 Blanco Road in San Antonio, and at all seven San Antonio Clothesline Cleaner locations. Former DOE official, Texas Energy Conservation director and CPS general manager to address San Antonio Clean Technology Forum at Witte July 23, 2009

The San Antonio Clean Technology Forum hosts Paul Dickinson, a former top official of the US Department of Energy, Dub Taylor, Director of the Texas State Energy Conservation Office and Steve Bartley is the interim General Manager of CPS Energy on Thursday July 23 at the Witte Museum Pressler Auditorium.

The forum will begin at 11:30 and last until 1:30. Tickets are $16 if purchased in advance or $25 after July 16 and may be obtained through eventbrite.

The purpose of the San Antonio Clean Technology Forum is to builds strong connections and improve collective knowledge to advance sustainability and business growth throughout the San Antonio region.

New Braunfels' Organic Living Club brings speakers and presentations to Comal, Hays and Guadalupe counties

If you live in Hays, Comal or Guadalupe county you have a regular source for information on organic gardening and natural health topics. Since July 2008, the Organic Living Club has met (mostly) on the fourth Monday of the month at various locations appropriate to the topic.

Their Monday, June 29, 2009 meeting at 7:00 PM will be at the Markley Family Farm, 394 Union Wine Road, east of New Braunfels on the right of FM 725 past Zipp Road.

The Markley Family Farm grows vegetables and fruits hydroponically. Topics of discussion will include: Tree planting with a tree being planted at the farm, natural oak wilt prevention, tree pruning, drought avoidance.

Attendees are advised to bring a chair and to dress appropriately since there is no air conditioning. The presentation is free, there are no dues and everyone is welcome, but seating is limited. Please RSVP if coming to rsvp@organiclivingclub.org.

Past speakers have included Malcolm Beck, Mason Arnold of Greenling, Bob Fitzsimmons of Bob's Organic Garden and numerous presenters on alternative medicine. A number of their meetings have been recorded and posted to Jason George's YouTube channel, OrganicTexas.

Build San Antonio Green, Imagine Homes and other honored for green building achievement by National Association of Home Builders

San Antonio's own Build San Antonio Green was honored by the National Association of Home Builders at their National Green Building Awards ceremony May 11, 2009 in Dallas.

Specifically Build San Antonio Green and the Missoula (Mont.) Building Industry Association were honored as the local green home building programs of the year.

Local builder Imagine Homes was also honored for the second year in a row for the Affordable Home of the Year.

Below is list of other honorees:

Concept Home of the Year - CVH Inc. (Clifton View Homes), for a home in Coupeville ,Wash. Tight insulation and other energy-efficient features meant homeowners spent $76 on electricity in the first month they lived there – and that was before the builder installed photovoltaic panels on the rooftop and the monthly bill became a credit, rather than a debit, Ferrier said.

Luxury Home of the Year: Solaire Homebuilders of Bend, Ore. With beautiful interior finishes, this custom home was built with reclaimed and recycled materials and designed to be 60 percent more energy efficient than required by code.

Production Home of the Year - Celebrate by Del Webb, an active-adult community in Fredericksburg, Va., is taking green features to a larger scale and now certifying the homes in this new development to the National Green Building Standard.

Single-family Remodeling Project of the Year - Honors went to Red-B Construction for a Durham, N.C., home with striking design and extensive use of deconstruction techniques that improve resource efficiency.

Multifamily Remodeling Project of the Year - Hardwick G.C. Inc. of Orlando, Fla., turned an early 20th-century bungalow into a charming duplex that has a rainwater harvesting system, native landscaping and other water-efficient features.

Multifamily Rental Project of the Year - Tonti Properties’ 270-unit community in Frisco, Texas, is the first Energy Star-certified development in the region. The company created an on-site tree farm during contruction to enable landscapers to replant trees moved during the building process.

Condominium Project of the Year - Onion Flats LLC of Philadelphia created an 8-unit infill project in the Northern Liberties neighborhood featuring slick, modern design, solar panels, green roofs and great city views.

Townhouse Project of the Year - Asdal Builders LLC was honored for a New Jersey rental development that caters to senior citizens and focuses on sustainable, low-maintenance design and cost-effective geothermal heating.

Development of the Year - The community of Woodlands Edge in Little Rock, Ark., developed by Rocket Properties LLC has nature trails, wildlife preservation areas and an extensive education program for its residents focused on environmental stewardship of the grounds.

The city of Chicago was named Governmental Advocate of the Year for its extensive voluntary energy-efficiency improvement programs and for encouraging green roofs on high-rise buildings.

EcoBroker International won Group Advocate of the Year honors for its green building education efforts among real estate brokers.

Donna Shirey, a longtime NAHB Remodelers leader and green-building professional from Seattle, was honored as Remodeling Advocate of the Year.

Architect Michelle Kaufmann, known for her groundbreaking green and modular design, was named Individual Advocate of the Year.

John Freer, a longtime Missoula BIA leader and founder of the association’s green building council, was honored as NAHB Green Builder Advocate of the Year.
